To fulfill their responsibilities for providing public bus, trolley, trackless trolley, rapid transit, and (since 1964) commuter rail services to the Boston metropolitan area, the MTA and MBTA have been administered respectively by a board of public trustees and board of directors, both served by a general manager. Series records communications submitted for consideration at meetings of the MTA board in copies maintained for reference by the general manager.
